About training for life at sea

Marine students can be hired on sea ships for a training voyage. The administrative instructions on training for life at sea contain information about the conditions for eligibility, the formalities you need to comply with, rights and obligations and remuneration, both for students and for shipowners.

Marine students

As a marine student you can be hired on a sea ship for a training voyage. You will receive an allowance for this, part of which is paid by the Seafarers department of the NSSO.

Shipowners

As a shipowner you can hire marine students on sea ships for a training voyage. You are obliged to pay a solidarity contribution of 5.42 percent on the total remuneration for a training voyage.

By total remuneration we mean:

  • the allowance from the National Social Security Office,
  • the additional allowance from the Fund for the Merchant Shipping Sector, and
  • the possible payment due from the shipowner.
